What is Trump accusing Obama of that he is asking to investigate his government?
Trump made strong accusations against former President Barack Obama and asks for him to be investigated by the State Department
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that former President Barack Obama should be the Justice Department's top target in connection with a recent report alleging that Obama administration officials manipulated crucial information about Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The accusation was supported by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who sent criminal referrals to the Justice Department related to the report released Friday, which suggests that top Obama officials participated in a "treasonous conspiracy."
In remarks during a meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Trump said that former President Obama, along with key figures in his administration like then-Vice President Joe Biden and former officials including James Comey, James Clapper, and John Brennan, were involved in the alleged cover-up. Trump was blunt: "The ringleader was President Obama. There's no question this was treason," he declared. The report, released Friday, also implicated other former officials including Clapper, Brennan, and Comey, and came as Trump has maintained for years that the investigation into Russian interference and possible collusion with Russia was a "hoax." Trump Orders Declassification of Documents Last March, Trump signed a memorandum ordering the declassification of all documents related to the FBI's Crossfire Hurricane investigation into Russian interference.
Trump continued his attacks by claiming that Gabbard had informed him of the arrival of thousands of additional documents that would further implicate Obama and his team. "It's time to go after people," the president said, insisting that what happened in 2016 and 2020 was a crime of historic proportions.
"Obama has been caught directly. What they did in 2016 and 2020 is criminal, it's criminal at the highest level," he stressed.
The president was also questioned about a recent investigation involving Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein's associate, but shifted attention to the allegations against Obama, continuing his narrative that his administration is determined to conduct a "witch hunt" to uncover the truth behind Russian interference.
