Iowa boy cries after teammate threatens him with deportation for being an immigrant
American boy from Iowa cries after being threatened with deportation by goalkeeper during a children's soccer game
A 12-year-old American boy went viral on social media after breaking down in tears during a children's soccer game in Iowa, as a teammate from the opposing team threatened him that President Donald Trump would arrest and deport him for being an undocumented immigrant.
The minor, identified as Max had just celebrated his team's victory in a local tournament when the opposing team goalkeeper told him he was an "undocumented immigrant" and that Trump would send him back to another country. Max explained that he was born in the United States and is not an immigrant, but that his physical appearance, influenced by his mother's Asian features (she is originally from Thailand), was the reason for the verbal abuse. The moment was recorded by his mother, Mtee Tet, and shared on social media, generating thousands of reactions and supportive comments. In the video, Max is visibly distressed, tearfully recounting how he was singled out as a foreigner despite being a US citizen. The post sparked a debate about how political discourse and immigration policies can influence the way children interact with each other and perceive their identity. Tet reported that the family has contacted the appropriate authorities and that the incident is being investigated in the context of the tournament. The mother also stated that her intention in sharing the video was not to provoke controversy, but to show the impact that certain words and attitudes can have on children. "My hope is that this moment fosters reflection and compassion. The division and hatred we see in the country are reaching our children, and that is heartbreaking," Tet expressed.
