China Issues 85,000 Visas to Indian Citizens Amid Global Trade Tensions
China has issued over 85,000 visas to Indian citizens in early 2025, easing travel rules and promoting cultural, educational, and economic exchanges amid rising global trade tensions.
In a significant diplomatic gesture, China has issued over 85,000 visas to Indian citizens between January 1 and April 9, 2025. This move comes amid escalating global trade tensions and is seen as an effort to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two nations.
Facilitating Travel: New Visa Relaxations
To encourage more Indian visitors, China has introduced several relaxations in its visa process:
- No Online Appointment: Indian applicants can now directly submit their visa applications at visa centers on working days without prior online appointments.
- Biometric Exemption: Travelers visiting China for a short time are exempt from providing biometric data, reducing processing time.
- Reduced Visa Fees: The cost of obtaining a Chinese visa has been lowered, making travel more affordable for Indian visitors.
- Quicker Processing Times: The visa approval timeline has become more streamlined, allowing for quicker issuance and benefiting both business and leisure travelers.
- Tourism Promotion: China is actively promoting travel for Indian tourists, showcasing its cultural and seasonal attractions, such as festivals and destinations.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong emphasized the importance of India-China economic and trade relations, stating that “China-India economic and trade relationship is based on complementarity and mutual benefit. Facing the U.S. abuse of tariffs... the two largest developing countries should stand together to overcome the difficulties.” He further added that “Trade and tariff wars have no winners. All countries should uphold the principles of extensive consultation, practice true multilateralism, jointly oppose all forms of unilateralism and protectionism.”
Soft Power and Cultural Exchange
Despite ongoing challenges in diplomatic relations, this surge in visa approvals is being seen as a soft diplomacy effort. It signals China’s willingness to rebuild trust and goodwill with India — not just at a government level but among citizens too. The rise in visa approvals also enables Indian students, many of whom pursue medical education in China, to resume their studies post-pandemic. Additionally, the renewed focus on business, tourism, and educational exchanges shows a strong commitment to nurturing people-to-people relationships between the two Asian giants.
China’s issuance of over 85,000 visas to Indian citizens in early 2025 reflects a strategic move to enhance bilateral relations through cultural and economic exchanges. By easing visa procedures and promoting mutual understanding, both nations can work towards a more collaborative and harmonious future.
