They return to California the control over 150 soldiers deployed in Los Angeles by Trump
The announcement comes amid complaints from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who criticized the federalization of National Guard forces.
The United States Department of Defense agreed on Tuesday to reinstate 150 California National Guard soldiers deployed to protect federal buildings and personnel in Los Angeles to their wildfire protection duties, without the consent of Governor Gavin Newsom.
The announcement comes after General Gregory Guillot, leader of the U.S. Northern Command, made a request to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth proposing that 200 of the approximately 4,000 members of the California National Guard return to duty fighting wildfires in California.
The purpose of this measure is to help prepare for the fire season. The state is expecting an early and active season this year, with above-average activity in July and August, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).
In response, Gov. Gavin Newson said, “These men and women signed up to serve, not to be political props for Trump.”
“Allowing some of them to return to fight fires is a step in the right direction, but thousands of troops are still being prevented from doing their real jobs as police officers, paramedics, school teachers and public servants. It’s time to send them all home,” the governor added.
Newsom is clashing with the Trump administration, which deployed the troops without their consent in a defiance of the U.S.’s decision in 60 years, sparking a legal battle.
The Democratic governor also complained that the deployment of California troops to Los Angeles has also weakened the fight. anti-drug.
An estimated 32% of the California National Guard troops dedicated to the state's Drug Enforcement Task Force have been reassigned by President Trump to militarize Los Angeles.
Normally, under the governor's command, nearly 450 troops are deployed throughout the state, including border ports of entry, to help combat transnational criminal organizations and seize illegal narcotics, one of Trump's promises.
