Third immigrant who escaped from ICE facilities in New Jersey arrested
The four men escaped from Delaney Hall, a private detention center that has been criticized for its internal treatment and precarious conditions.
Franklin Norberto Bautista Reyes, from Honduras, one of the two detainees who were still missing after escaping from a federal immigration detention center in New Jersey, was arrested, the FBI reported, while the price was raised to $25,000 for the last fugitive, Andrés Felipe Pineda Mogollón.
A group of four undocumented immigrants escaped from the Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark last Saturday amid reports of disorder at the facility, breaking through a wall and fleeing through a parking lot, according to U.S. Sen. Andy Kim, a New Jersey Democrat, and Homeland Security officials.
In the case of Bautista Reyes, he was charged in May with aggravated assault, attempted bodily injury, terroristic threats and a weapons offense. Pineda Mogollon, of Colombia, was charged with misdemeanor counts of larceny and robbery.
Joel Enrique Sandoval Lopez, another of the fugitives, was arrested in Passaic, New Jersey, on Friday. Then on Sunday, Joan Sebastian Castaneda Lozada surrendered to federal authorities in Milleville, New Jersey.
Sandoval Lopez, of Honduras, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm in October and aggravated assault in February, authorities said. Castaneda Lozada, from Colombia, was charged with robbery, theft, and conspiracy, authorities said.
In the case of Bautista Reyes, it was not immediately clear how he was found.
The escape occurred after food shortages, unsafe water, crumbling mesh walls, and a lack of staff caused chaos, according to Amy Torres, executive director of the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice. Torres previously told CNN that the riots began after detainees received insufficient lunch after going more than 20 hours without food.
The four people detained at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility were charged in separate complaints with escaping from ICE custody, U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced.
