These devices are used to monitor immigrants who have ongoing immigration proceedings. According to The Guardian, the watches are intended for immigrants enrolled in the Alternatives to Detention (ATD) program and offer 24/7 tracking to avoid physical detention, i.e., arrest. The ATD program is designed to allow immigrants to remain in their homes while awaiting the outcome of their immigration cases. Instead of being detained, participants must undergo intensive monitoring to ensure their compliance with the immigration process.

Monitoring options include the use of ankle monitors or smartwatches, depending on the circumstances of each case.

How does the VeriWatch smartwatch work?

The VeriWatch, a smartwatch manufactured by BI Inc., is equipped with several advanced features that allow for constant and accurate monitoring 24/7.

“These GPS wrist-worn monitoring devices would complement ATD’s existing capabilities for aliens who qualify for the non-detained record in a less intrusive manner, thereby improving participants’ compliance with the immigration process,” explained Corey A. Although the VeriWatch is presented as A less invasive option than ankle monitors, it remains a tool for constant monitoring. Immigrants participating in the ATD program must comply with strict location and availability rules.
