It looks like a floating city: this is the gigantic “turtle cruise” for 60,000 people
Pangeos is a futuristic project inspired by a giant sea turtle. It would have space for 60,000 people, hotels, swimming pools and shopping centers
What if a cruise ship was so big that it could hold an entire city? That is the idea behind Pangeos, a futuristic project that proposes building a gigantic boat inspired by the shape of a sea turtle and with capacity for about 60,000 people.
Although it does not yet exist and for now only lives in plans and digital renders, the concept attracted attention around the world due to its dimensions that are difficult to imagine. If it were ever built, it would be several times larger than the largest cruise ships currently sailing.
Behind the proposal is the Italian studio Lazzarini Design Studio, known for developing futuristic designs of ships, floating cities and means of transportation that seem straight out of a science fiction movie.
A ship as big as an entire neighborhood
Pangeos was not conceived as a traditional cruise ship. According to its creators, the structure would be around 550 meters long and have such a large area that it could house hotels, shopping centers, restaurants, parks, swimming pools, gyms, residential areas and even spaces for smaller boats.
The idea is that it works as a kind of self-sufficient floating city, where thousands of people can live, work or vacation without having to touch land for long periods.
Conceptual images show a huge sea turtle-shaped platform sailing over the ocean while housing all kinds of services and recreational areas.

Space for 60,000 people
One of the data that attracts the most attention is its capacity. Designers estimate that it could accommodate up to 60,000 people including residents, guests, workers and crew. To put the figure in context, it is roughly equivalent to the entire population of a small town in the United States.
Currently, the largest cruise ships in the world carry around 10,000 people between passengers and crew. Pangeos would multiply that figure several times.
Shops, hotels and swimming pools in the middle of the ocean
The illustrations released by the studio show a floating complex with all kinds of amenities.
The proposal aims to create an experience closer to a city than a conventional cruise.
The great challenge: building it
For now, the biggest hurdle is turning the idea into reality. The creators themselves recognize that a structure of such size would require multimillion-dollar investments, technological advances and a completely new port infrastructure.
Challenges related to energy consumption, safety, offshore stability and environmental impact would also need to be resolved.
For this reason, many experts consider that the project is closer to a futuristic design exercise than immediate construction.
Could it come true one day?
The history of navigation is full of projects that seemed impossible until technology made them viable. Just a few decades ago, today's megacruise ships seemed like a fantasy. Today they transport thousands of passengers and function as authentic floating tourist complexes.
No one knows if Pangeos will ever be built. But one thing is certain: rarely has a naval design managed to capture so much attention simply by daring to imagine something that seems impossible.
For now, the huge floating turtle remains a concept. But also an example of how far imagination can go when combined with engineering and extreme luxury.
