Mexican Migrant Dies in ICE Custody at Georgia Detention Center
The Mexican Consulate confirmed the death of a Mexican migrant in ICE custody in Georgia and called for a prompt and transparent investigation
The Mexican Consulate General in Atlanta confirmed the death of a Mexican migrant who was in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the state of Georgia.
The diplomatic mission reported that the Mexican man died on January 14. 2026 at the Robert A. Deyton Detention Facility, an immigration processing center located in Lovejoy, Clayton County.
To date, the identity of the Mexican migrant has not been revealed.
Investigation and contact with the family
The consulate stated that it has already established immediate contact with the migrant's family members, both in the United States and in Mexico, to whom it is providing support, guidance, and consular assistance.
It is also reported that it is maintaining constant communication with the ICE Field Office in Atlanta.
Mexican authorities requested that the circumstances of the death be clarified and assured that they are collaborating with the corresponding agencies so that the investigation is carried out promptly and transparently. "The consulate is addressing the case closely and remains in direct contact with the authorities responsible for the investigation," the diplomatic mission stated in its official message.
Repatriation of Remains
The Mexican Consulate added that the necessary procedures are underway for the repatriation of the Mexican national's remains to Mexico, a process that will be carried out in accordance with the wishes of his family. “The Government of Mexico expresses its deepest condolences to the family of the Mexican national and reiterates its commitment to providing consular assistance and protection to our community,” the consulate stated. This case adds to a series of deaths of migrants in US immigration custody, which have raised questions about detention conditions and medical care in these facilities. To date, ICE has not released any public details regarding the cause of the Mexican citizen's death. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) indicated that it will continue to monitor the case through the consulate in Atlanta,while awaiting the official results of the investigation.
