Democratic Senator Alex Padilla announced Tuesday that he will not run for governor of California in the 2026 election.

“With all my heart and more conviction than ever, I have decided not to run for governor of California next “This year,” Padilla told reporters at the US Capitol. “I've decided to continue this fight because the Constitution deserves to be defended.” Padilla, the first Latino to represent California in the Senate, gained national attention this summer after a video of him being tackled and detained at a press conference hosted by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem went viral. Padilla has spent years climbing the ranks in California politics, from Los Angeles City Council to the Legislature and Secretary of State.

Gavin Newsom, his longtime ally, appointed him senator in late 2020, after Harris left her seat to become vice president.

The California gubernatorial election will be held on November 3, 2026,in an open race to succeed Newsom, who is completing his second consecutive term since his election in 2019.
