Sheinbaum responds to Trump that Mexico is “acting” in the combat against drug trafficking
The Mexican president recalled that this is not "the first time" that Trump makes these statements, while claiming the work of the Mexican authorities
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reiterated this Thursday that her Government wants to continue collaborating with the U.S. in the combat against drug trafficking and in strengthening security, respect I'm about “sovereignty”, and highlighted that they are “acting” with results in this regard, after the American president, Donald Trump, threatened again with an intervention in the country.
“We are acting. There is an almost 50% reduction in intentional homicides, 2,500 laboratories disabled, destroyed, detained people (…) There is reduction in the flow of fentanyl from Mexico to the United States”, he declared in his daily press conference.
On Wednesday Trump threatened to intervene in Mexico by assuring that if the Mexican authorities “don't do their job” in the fight against drug trafficking, Washington will do it.
The president recalled that this is not “the first time” that the Republican has made these statements, while claiming the work of the Mexican authorities and returned to reject a US intervention to fight drug-trafficking.
The bilateral dialogue, as he stressed, has had results in the framework of “mutual respect”, which is why he said not wanting “to break trust”.
Sheinbaum stated that Mexico's relationship with its northern neighbor is based on points such as respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as shared responsibility and respect.
“That is essential, but they have collaborated too. We want to continue collaborating always when we have these four very clear points, both countries, without violating sovereignty,” he stated.
In this way, he asked Washington to recognize that they have a “serious problem” with drug consumption, while he urged them to stop the weapons trafficking to Mexico.
In this sense, Sheinbaum mentioned the recent U.S. National Drug Control Strategy, document in which “priority” “merely” recognize the problem of drug addiction in their society, which noted affects 16% of the American population.
He claimed that it was Trump himself who asked him in one of his first calls why Mexico didn't have this same problem, to which he responded. which is due to the “family values” in the country and to the government campaign that recognizes drug consumption as a “public health” problem.
“We don't want fentanyl to reach young people in the United States, nor do we want it to reach young people in Mexico, nor anywhere in the world, nor any drug, but there has to be some recognition of the problem from the United States,” he said.
Since his return to the White House, Trump has threatened on several occasions to intervene in Mexico to fight against the cartels for that, in their judgement, “control” the country, something that has been rejected by Sheinbaum for supposing a violation of Mexican sovereignty. EFE
