Florida university students oppose that ICE can interrogate them about their migratory status
Operations to detect immigrants at Florida universities have begun to generate protests in rejection of ICE
A group of students from Florida International University (FIU) participated in a demonstration to protest against an agreement signed by the educational institution through which school police can interrogate them about their migratory status and from that determine if their stay in the country is considered irregular.
The students in disagreement are clear that, by detecting To immigrants without documents to support their permanence in the United States, the next step will be to detain them and immediately inform the agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) with the objective of deporting them quickly.
Another objective of the demonstration was to send a message rejecting the appointment of Jeanette Nunez, former lieutenant governor of Florida, as the new president of FIU, since they link her image to the anti-immigrant policies promoted from Washington.
During the last few months, the government headed by Republican Ron DeSantis has reinforced its policies against the presence of foreigners without legal status in the "Sunshine State."
In fact, Florida, along with Texas, are the entities where the orders signed by President Donald Trump have had the greatest echo to carry out what he assures will be the largest deportation of immigrants in all of history.
Under this approach, Florida authorities set up a detention center in record time immigrant detention center called “Alligator Alcatraz,” which has not stopped operating since July, despite an initial judge’s ruling that was later overturned.
Aligning itself with the same strategy, Ron DeSantis converted the Baker Correctional Institution into another detention center with the capacity to house up to 1,300 foreigners.
This project, known as the “Deportation Depot,” will be allocated $6 million to operate and is located 15 minutes from the Lake City, Florida airport.
However,The opening of a third detention center in Florida, known as the “Panhandle Pokey,” is still pending announcement.
As far-fetched as it may sound, any of the aforementioned facilities could eventually house college students considered by ICE to be a threat to national security.
So far, the University of Florida (UF), the University of South Florida (USF), the University of Central Florida (UCF), Florida Atlantic University (FAU), and Florida International University (FIU) have already signed collaboration agreements with ICE.
