4-year-old boy in Texas accidentally shoots minor 2 after finding a gun
Police arrested the gun owner for failing to properly secure it. The child is in critical but stable condition
A young boy allegedly shot another child under two years old after finding an unsecured firearm in Channelview, Texas.
The incident occurred Friday at noon at a home on Onaleigh Drive, where at least seven adults were gathered in the living room while the children were alone in a bedroom, according to Fox26.
The Moment of the Shooting
According to authorities, a four-year-old boy was seen holding the gun, while the two-year-old lay wounded and bleeding.
The victim's grandfather recounted the chaotic scene, describing how his wife woke him up in a state of despair after discovering what had happened.
The wounded boy was airlifted to a hospital, where he underwent surgery in the intensive care unit. He is currently in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive.
Arrest for Negligence with a Firearm
Police identified the gun's owner as 25-year-old Santiago Daniel Canet, who was visiting the home.
According to investigators, the gun was not properly secured and was accessible to the children.
As a result, Canet was arrested and charged with facilitating a minor's access to a firearm.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office reported that the family cooperated with authorities, although the weapon was put away before officers arrived.
Detectives from crimes against children responded to the scene, and the involvement of Child Protective Services is not ruled out.
Authorities insist on safe storage
Commander Ben Katrib emphasized the importance of keeping firearms safely stored, especially in homes with children.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez called the day "heartbreaking," noting that two Similar incidents occurred that same day.
In a separate case, A three-year-old boy was also shot and wounded in Houston after a discharge that is being investigated as negligent. Both children are hospitalized and, according to authorities, are expected to survive.
