A 5-year-old boy was rescued after escaping naked from a home where, according to Pennsylvania authorities, he was kept locked most of the time in a room covered in feces and set up as a makeshift cell.

The Pennsylvania State Police reported that the minor was found around 7:30 a.m. Friday walking in the middle of a street in his neighborhood in Swatara Township, WGLA reported.

Neighbors passing by stopped the boy, who was only wearing a urine-stained green blanket, and stayed with him until emergency crews took him to a hospital for a medical evaluation.

A room turned into a prison

The agents determined that the minor came from a home located a few blocks from the place where he was found.

Upon entering the property, they described conditions of extreme accumulation of garbage, hundreds of flies and reduced spaces to move due to the disorder.

In the room identified as the child's bedroom they found a door secured with a baby gate, multiple zip ties and duct tape, wooden planks screwed together from the outside, walls and windows covered in feces, a destroyed bed covered in food scraps, trash and toys scattered on the floor.

According to the investigation, the child remained approximately 90% of the time inside the closed room.

The adults handed him food—granola bars, cereal, juice, milk and water—through the gaps in the barrier installed at the door.

The police indicated that those responsible only bathed him once a week and sometimes went more than seven days without bathing him.

One of the accused stated that the minor could remain locked up for up to three days in a row, forcing him to relieve himself inside the room.

Adults had to cut the zip ties to remove it

The researchers noted that each time the child was released from the room, the adults had to cut between five and ten plastic ties that kept the barrier secured.

Then they would add new zip ties and more tape to reseal the entrance.

According to the investigation, the bras were purchased in bulk at a local store due to the frequency with which they were used.

Authorities arrested Tucker Heagy, 20; Jade Shuey, 21; and Stephanie Schaffner, 42.

The three were identified as guardians of the minor, although their exact relationship with him was not specified.

All face a charge of endangering the welfare of a minor.

Due to the unhealthy state of the property, municipal authorities declared the home uninhabitable and ordered its administrative condemnation.
