Delaware officer and suspect died in shooting at drivers licensing office
Authorities did not reveal the identity of the officer who died after confronting the suspect. The governor ordered flags to be flown at half-staff
A Delaware State Police officer died after confronting a man who opened fire at the Wilmington Division of Motor Vehicles on Tuesday, December 23, around 2:00 pm (local time). Authorities confirmed that the attacker also died, and the investigation remains open. Through social media, the Delaware State Police reported an active shooter and asked the public to avoid the area where the motor vehicle office is located. Other people injured: In an update, they indicated that a woman and a second officer suffered injuries, in addition to confirming the death of the Delaware officer, as well as the attacker. “The death of a Delaware State Police officer during this incident has been confirmed.” A 40-year-old woman was transported to an area hospital with minor, non-gunshot-related injuries. A 35-year-old woman was evaluated for respiratory distress and was denied transportation to the hospital. A second state police officer was evaluated for minor, non-gunshot-related injuries and was not transported by EMS," the police stated. The identity of the officer who died was not released by authorities. The Wilmington Police Department sent its condolences to the officer's family. The governor sends a message: "The thoughts and prayers of the Wilmington Police Department are with every member of the Delaware State Police, as well as their families and loved ones, at this time of tragedy. “We are with you, today and always.” Authorities asked the public to avoid the area and will continue to provide updates on the case. Governor Matt Meyer commented on the accident: “Today we mourn the loss of a Delaware State Trooper who gave his life in the line of duty. Meyer ordered all flags at state buildings and facilities to be flown at half-staff in memory of the Delaware state trooper.
