Michigan authorities investigate an explosion that completely destroyed a home and left a man dead and his wife seriously injured
A man identified as Doug Preston, 62, died after the explosion that destroyed the family home in Plainfield Township, a suburb of the state of Michigan. His wife, Lucy Preston, 61, was rescued from the rubble with catastrophic injuries and remains hospitalized.
The explosion occurred around 4:00 a.m. Tuesday and prompted dozens of emergency calls from neighbors who reported a loud explosion and a large fireball, as reported by WZZM.
Authorities believe the fire was intentional.
Although the exact causes remain under investigation, authorities indicated that the case points to a domestic situation.
Kent County Undersheriff Bryan Muir said investigators believe the fire was intentionally set by Doug Preston in what appears to be a murder-suicide attempt.
According to authorities, text messages recovered during the investigation support this theory, although no specific details were released.
Alpine Township Fire Chief Jeremy Kelly also noted that a natural gas leak may have contributed to the explosion.
Court documents cited by local media indicate that Lucy Preston had filed for divorce in March, after almost 40 years of marriage.
The couple was due to appear in court this week and also had a mutual restraining order related to property and financial matters.
Neighbors assured that the marriage seemed stable until a few months ago.
One of them, Jerry Orent, who had known the family for decades, claimed that Lucy had told him about recent marital problems.
Neighbors helped rescue the survivor
After the explosion, several residents quickly came to help among the rubble.
Tim Johnson and a teenager identified as Mandrell Bryant participated in the rescue of Lucy Preston.
Bryant reported that the woman had been violently thrown out of the home due to the explosion.
High temperatures and burning wreckage later made it difficult to recover Doug Preston's body.
Friends and relatives reported that Lucy suffered fourth-degree burns over much of her body and remains connected to a ventilator while facing multiple surgeries and a long rehabilitation process.
Lucy was widely known within the local Polish community and had in 2023 received the cultural title of “Busia Queen”.
In addition, he had founded the charity Busia's Boutique in 2024, dedicated to helping families in need.
Friends described Lucy as a caring person and deeply committed to her community.
