Michigan Parents Face Murder Charges After Death of Morbidly Obese 7-Year-Old Son
The prosecution maintains that the minor lived for years under conditions of extreme abandonment and without adequate medical care.
A Michigan couple was charged with second-degree murder, child abuse and torture after their seven-year-old son died from heart disease associated with severe health problems and alleged long-term conditions of neglect.
The defendants were identified as Damien O'Brien, 40, and Jessica O'Brien, 41.
According to authorities, the minor, identified as Casper, died after suffering a medical emergency on November 4, 2025 at the family home located in Flint Township, reported WJRT.
Prosecutor's Office maintains that the child lived for years without adequate medical care
Documents cited by the prosecution indicate that the minor died of dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart disease, with severe obesity as a contributing factor.
The medical report indicated that the child registered a weight much higher than expected for his age and height.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the case reflects a situation of prolonged neglect.
According to the investigation, the child would have gone to the doctor only once during his life and was subsequently referred to a specialist who never treated him.
Authorities also noted that the minor was not enrolled in school and that child protection agencies had had no prior contact with the family.
Authorities described severe conditions inside the home
After the child's death, investigators and child protection personnel inspected the home.
According to official reports, they found an accumulation of garbage in different areas of the house and conditions that they described as unhealthy.
They also indicated that there were animals that required veterinary attention.
The prosecution pointed out that the father worked as an engineer and had family health insurance, but maintains that no medical follow-up was provided to the minor.
Another minor was placed under child protection
Authorities reported that the child was diagnosed with autism and that a younger sister was taken into the custody of child protective services.
The parents were arrested this week and remain detained without bail.
His next court appearance is scheduled for July 2.
The case remains in process and the accusations must be evaluated by the judicial system.
