Anne Hathaway's intense preparation method before each film
The Oscar winner detailed her exhaustive research process prior to filming, a system based on questioning every line of the script
Anne Hathaway has consolidated one of the most respected careers in Hollywood thanks to her versatility and, above all, a meticulous discipline that borders on obsession.
Recently, the American actress revealed on the A24 production company podcast the intense preparation method she undergoes before turning on the cameras in each of her film projects.
During a conversation with director David Lowery – with whom she worked on the film “Mother Mary” – Hathaway explained that her approach consists of carrying out an exhaustive research phase and breaking down the script to the millimeter.
The performer leaves nothing to chance: she analyzes each dialogue, structure and subtext in order to solve any interpretive enigma before stepping onto the film set.
"I ask all possible questions. I analyze everything thoroughly. I find fault with everything. And I think, and I know for sure, that this has scared some directors," the actress confessed.
However, she clarified that the purpose of this incisive questioning is to become the perfect ally during filming: "I do this because I am not going to ask a single question when we are on set. I want to be your first lieutenant, carry out your vision and know exactly what we are doing and why."
This pre-production system guarantees that, once filming has started, the Oscar winner for “Les Misérables” can fully concentrate on execution and artistic direction, optimizing the creative team's time.
Currently, Hathaway applies this rigor in her many facets as an actress and producer, preparing for great future challenges such as her long-awaited role as Penelope in “The Odyssey,” the upcoming film adaptation directed by Christopher Nolan.
