Arvind Kejriwal to Return to Tihar Jail After Interim Bail Ends

Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will return to Tihar Jail today. The Supreme Court had granted him three weeks of interim bail for election campaigning, which ended on Saturday with the completion of voting for the Lok Sabha elections. CM Kejriwal had expressed suspicion of some serious illness and demanded an extension of interim bail on medical grounds, however, the court postponed its order on his petition until June 5.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sources said on Saturday that the chief minister may visit Mahatma Gandhi's memorial at Rajghat, the party office on DDU Marg, and a temple before leaving for Tihar Jail on June 2 at around 3 pm.
CM Kejriwal's Activities Before Returning to Tihar
Kejriwal held a meeting of the AAP's political affairs committee at his residence on Saturday, a day before his scheduled surrender, before attending the 'India' alliance meeting at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's house. The meeting was attended by prominent AAP leaders, including Cabinet Minister Atishi, Rajya Sabha members Raghav Chadha and Sanjay Singh, and MLA Durgesh Pathak.
Sources said the chief minister stressed the need to maintain unity among party leaders in his absence. It was also emphasized that Kejriwal will continue to be the chief minister and his wife Sunita Kejriwal will continue to convey his message to party leaders, volunteers, and the people of Delhi.
Supreme Court Relief for Election Campaign
CM Kejriwal was released from jail until June 1 on interim bail granted by the Supreme Court on May 10 for campaigning in the Lok Sabha elections. Kejriwal said on Friday that he will leave home around 3 pm on June 2 to surrender before the jail authorities.
The Chief Minister had earlier moved the Supreme Court seeking an extension of interim bail granted to him in the money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam by seven days. However, the apex court registry on Wednesday refused to list his plea urgently. In this petition, Kejriwal had pleaded that he needed time to undergo medical tests as he was losing weight and had high ketone levels.
Following this, he moved the special CBI-ED court seeking interim bail on medical grounds. Hearing his petition on Saturday, the court of Special Judge Kaveri Baveja reserved its order for June 5.
