Former SCBA President Urges PM Modi to Act on BJP Leader’s Comment Against Judiciary
Former SCBA President urges PM Modi to take action over controversial remarks made by a BJP leader against the judiciary, calling it a threat to judicial independence.
In a bold move to uphold the integrity of India’s judicial system, former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Vikas Singh has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking immediate intervention against derogatory remarks made by a BJP leader targeting the judiciary.
Vikas Singh emphasized that such statements could erode public confidence in the judiciary and weaken its independence — a cornerstone of Indian democracy. He called on the Prime Minister to take strict action against the individual responsible and to send a clear message that constitutional institutions must be respected at all costs.
The remarks, which were widely circulated and criticized, reportedly suggested that courts were operating under bias and were not impartial in their rulings. Legal professionals and senior advocates across the country have condemned the comments, calling them harmful to the rule of law.
Singh stated in his letter that the judiciary cannot be subjected to political attacks and must remain above partisan politics. He warned that continued silence from the top leadership might embolden others to make similar statements in the future, thereby endangering the nation’s democratic fabric.
He further noted that India’s judiciary has played a historic role in upholding constitutional rights and freedoms, and any effort to discredit it could have far-reaching consequences. The former SCBA President called for unity among all stakeholders in preserving the sanctity of the courts.
This development comes amid growing concerns over the strained relationship between the executive and judiciary in India. While the central government has not yet responded to Singh’s letter, legal observers expect the matter to spark significant debate in the legal and political spheres.
As public pressure mounts, all eyes are now on Prime Minister Modi’s response and whether it will help restore confidence in maintaining the dignity and independence of India’s judicial institutions.
