Heavy Rains Cause Disruptions Across India
Heavy rains have caused severe disruptions across Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Assam, affecting thousands and prompting weather alerts.
Heavy rains lashed parts of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, leading to the closure of 12 roads. The state has been receiving intermittent rains since the onset of the monsoon, and the weather office has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning at isolated places on July 16 and 17. Rain is expected to continue in the state until July 19.
Floods in Uttar Pradesh
In Uttar Pradesh, over 750 villages have been affected by floods due to overflowing rivers, resulting in the deaths of eight people in rain-related incidents. The rising water levels in many rivers have caused floods in 776 villages across 17 districts. As a precaution, 3,90,455 people have been moved to safer locations, and the state government has set up 996 relief camps to aid those affected by the floods.
Cloudy Weather in Delhi
In Delhi, rainfall in various parts of the city provided relief from humidity and led to a drop in temperature. The Meteorological Department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with drizzle on Sunday, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to be around 35 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Heavy Rains in Kerala
Kerala has been experiencing heavy rains, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an ‘orange alert’ for three northern districts: Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. A ‘yellow alert’ has been issued for nine other districts in the state. The IMD has forecast light rain with thunder and strong winds in parts of Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam. The ‘orange alert’ for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod is in effect from June 14 to 16, indicating very heavy rain between 11 to 20 cm. A ‘yellow alert’ signals heavy rain between 6 to 11 cm.
Red Alert in Maharashtra
The IMD has issued a ‘red alert’ for the coastal districts of Raigad and Ratnagiri, as well as Kolhapur and Satara in western Maharashtra, warning of heavy rains on July 14. The forecast also predicts moderate to heavy rains in Thane district and Mumbai on Sunday. Extremely heavy rains are expected in the ghat areas of Satara and Kolhapur, with moderate rains in the plains. IMD scientist Sushma Nair stated that monsoon activities have intensified since July 11 and will continue for two to three more days.
Rain in Rajasthan
Some parts of eastern Rajasthan are likely to continue experiencing rainfall in the coming days. From July 15, rain activity is expected to increase in some areas, with heavy rain predicted in certain places. Storms and rain are anticipated to persist in parts of the Bikaner division for the next two days. However, rain activity is likely to decrease in the Bikaner division and increase in the Jodhpur division from July 15.
Flood Situation in Assam
The flood situation in Assam remains serious, with moderate rain expected in most areas of the state and heavy to very heavy rain forecast for parts of Kokrajhar district. This year, floods, landslides, storms, and lightning have resulted in 106 fatalities in Assam. The regional center of the India Meteorological Department in Guwahati has indicated that these adverse weather conditions will continue.
Overall, heavy rains across various states in India have caused significant disruptions, with numerous areas facing severe weather alerts, floods, and infrastructural challenges. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide relief to those affected.
