In Rajasthan, a relentless wave of scorching heat continues to grip the state, bringing discomfort and misery to its residents. With temperatures soaring and hot winds sweeping across the region, people are struggling to cope with the oppressive conditions. On Wednesday, most districts recorded day temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius, with Barmer reaching a scorching 46 degrees Celsius, marking the hottest day of the season so far. Even during the night, temperatures remained uncomfortably high, hovering around 30 degrees Celsius. According to reports from the Meteorological Department, Jaisalmer recorded a maximum temperature of 45.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Ganganagar at 45.2 degrees Celsius, Jodhpur at 45 degrees Celsius, Bikaner at 44.6 degrees Celsius, Kota at 44.6 degrees Celsius, Banasthali at 44.1 degrees Celsius, and Churu at 43.4 degrees Celsius.
The sweltering heat has forced authorities to take measures to protect residents, particularly school children, from the harsh conditions. In certain areas, schools have been closed, with Dholpur and Sirohi Collectors declaring a holiday for schools on Wednesday. Additionally, reduced school timings have been implemented in five districts, with classes ending earlier to minimize exposure to the scorching sun.
As the heat wave persists, the Meteorological Department has issued alerts for severe heat waves in some areas of Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions on May 9. Furthermore, the weather is expected to remain predominantly dry across most parts of the state for the next few days, with temperatures forecasted to rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius.
However, relief may be on the horizon, as a new Western Disturbance is anticipated to become active on May 10-11, bringing the possibility of thunderstorms and rainfall to isolated areas in Udaipur, Kota, and Jodhpur divisions. This weather system is projected to lead to a slight drop in temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius from May 11 onwards, offering respite from the scorching heat. Light rain showers accompanied by thunderstorms are expected to persist in isolated areas of the state until May 12.
