United Kingdom and Ukraine announce agreement to produce war drones
The agreement will allow British companies rapid access to data from Ukraine and accelerate the production of drones aimed at that country in large numbers
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced this Monday in London an agreement between their countries to share technology that will allow the production and joint development of war drones.
Thanks to the agreement, Ukraine will provide the United Kingdom with technological data collected on the war front by its drones, which will be used on British production lines to create a large-scale industry, according to a Downing Street statement.
The agreement "strengthens Ukraine's drone production and links the UK defense industry with the cutting-edge technology being developed on the front lines in Ukraine."
Starmer received Zelensky in Downing Street on the eve of the pair's participation in the NATO summit in The Hague.
The agreement, covering the next three years, will allow British companies rapid access to data from Ukraine within weeks and accelerate the production of drones aimed at that country in large numbers.
The United Kingdom will also provide 280 million pounds (327 million euros) in bilateral aid to Ukraine for the 2025/26 financial year, specifically targeting humanitarian, energy, reform and reconstruction programs.
Support for defense Ukrainian
This industrial partnership is expected to increase the flow of information and expertise between the two countries on drone air defense, but is intended to lay the groundwork for broader cooperation after the war.
“By harnessing Ukrainian innovation on the battlefield and combining it with British industrial strength, we are not only accelerating support for Ukrainian defense, but also providing security for our working people,” Starmer said, according to the statement.
In their meeting today, the British and Ukrainian leaders expressed their gratitude for NATO support and financial commitments from allies.
Starmer reiterated the importance of ensuring the Ukrainian military has the defensive equipment it needs to repel Russian forces.
In addition, the two agreed on the need for members of the so-called Coalition of the Willing to meet virtually in the coming weeks to decide on the next steps in forming a force that can guarantee any peace deal with Russia.
