An Independence Day of protests instead of celebrations
More than a celebration, it will be a call to stop the raids that have separated thousands of families.
At a time when members of the migrant community continue to be detained, disappeared, and separated from their families by federal agents, community leaders declared that there is nothing to celebrate this July 4th, Independence Day in the United States.
What brought us to this country was being able to have a better life. What has happened in recent days has been a campaign of terror, led by President Trump himself. Nearly 2,000 people have been detained, and we've received more than 450 calls from family members searching for their loved ones. Many of them are still missing," said Angelica Salas, leader of the Coalition for Full Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA). She called for using this July 4th to hold leaders accountable, from the president to the Secretary of Homeland Security and all other federal officials, because she said they are complicit in the destruction of these families. "If we truly believe in the values ????and the Constitution of this country, we must all follow it. We will not stop fighting." This Friday, July 4th, starting at 9:30 am There will be a demonstration and march outside Los Angeles City Hall on Spring Street with one demand: End the occupation.
The organizers have not identified themselves but cite the detention of 60,000 people without cause, without a warrant, and without due process, by transporting them to other states and countries without granting them the right to due process, as their reasons for the demonstration.
They also expressed their opposition to the deployment of 5,000 troops to Los Angeles, which they considered illegal.
The organizers of the July 4th march in Los Angeles describe President Trump in their invitation as an authoritarian. Trump believes he can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, however he wants.
They add that "he is violating our most basic and unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. He is bent on achieving a position of power that We the People must vehemently oppose."
Race Against ICE
On Saturday, July 5th at 8:00 am, immigrant rights advocates, union and faith leaders, and community members will join forces in the Run Against ICE, a peaceful 24-kilometer endurance race through Los Angeles.
The race, which is part of the Summer Resistance campaign events, will begin in Koreatown and end at Olvera Square with the purpose of honoring immigrant families and demanding an end to ICE raids and deportations.
The race route is designed to visit the places where communities have rebuilt and risen up, from the historic marches in MacArthur Park to the heart of Echo Park, Chinatown, and Boyle Heights.
The route will also pass through locations where ICE raids have separated families, including Home Depot at the corner of Wilshire and Union and Ambiance Apparel in the Fashion District.
