Texas Governor Greg Abbott reported that 161 people have been reported missing and assured that his administration will not stop “until every single missing person is found.”

Abbott confirmed that there are 94 current deaths associated with this particular flood, along with 15 deaths related to other floods across the state, for a total of 109 deaths.

“To put this in perspective… That’s way more deaths than in Hurricane Harvey. That’s how catastrophic this is,” Governor Abbott said.

According to Abbott, these numbers were obtained by compiling lists from multiple law enforcement entities as missing people were reported.

“We will not stop until every single missing person is found,” Abbott added.

Tsunami-like ‘wall of water’

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said state officials were aware of the potential for severe flooding, but not a “30-foot tsunami-like wall of water.”

Texas state officials were aware of the potential for a severe flooding event days before Kerr County was hit by catastrophic flooding, and resources had already been deployed, the governor said.

“We were ready with resources on the ground to be able to respond quickly,” the governor detailed with a day-by-day timeline.

What officials didn’t know was the magnitude of the storm, he noted.

“No one would have known it would be a 30-foot tsunami-like wall of water, I would think,” Abbott said. “All I can say is that the information we had, the information the state had, and the information we acted upon, was what prompted us to begin deploying assets and resources two days before the event occurred.”
