Donald Trump Urges Netanyahu to Quickly End Gaza War, Criticizes Ceasefire Demands
Donald Trump urges Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to quickly end the Gaza war, while criticizing calls for a ceasefire and threatening to expel Hamas supporters from the U.S.
Trump’s Encouragement to Netanyahu
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Trump recounted his conversation with Netanyahu during the Israeli leader’s visit to the United States in July. Trump stated, “He knows what he’s doing. I encouraged him to finish it, to finish it quickly... Get your victory and end it. It has to stop, the killing has to stop.” This meeting took place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence during Netanyahu’s U.S. tour, where the Israeli Prime Minister also met with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Criticism of Ceasefire Appeals
During an event focused on combating anti-Semitism, Trump expressed his disapproval of Biden and Harris’s calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. “From the beginning, Harris has worked to tie Israel’s hands, constantly calling for an immediate ceasefire,” Trump asserted. He argued that a ceasefire would only provide Hamas with time to regroup and potentially launch another attack similar to the one on October 7.
Support for Israel and Condemnation of Hamas
Trump emphasized his commitment to supporting Israel in securing a decisive victory. “I will give Israel the support it needs to win, but I want them to win quickly,” he declared. His remarks underline a firm stance on the Middle East conflict, reflecting his previous policies during his tenure as President.
Expulsion Threats to Hamas Supporters
Trump’s comments also extended to the domestic front, where he labeled Palestinian supporters who oppose U.S. support for Israel’s war as “Hamas-supporting thugs” and “pro-jihad.” He issued a stern warning that if he were to regain the presidency, he would move to arrest and deport these individuals from the United States. This rhetoric signals Trump’s hardline approach to dissenting voices on the Israel-Palestine conflict within the U.S.
Denial of Axios Report
Both Netanyahu’s office and Trump denied a report by Axios, which suggested that the two leaders discussed the ceasefire and hostage release negotiations during their most recent conversation. The denial was issued separately by both parties on Thursday, distancing themselves from the claims made in the report.
Trump’s remarks highlight his continued influence on the U.S. political landscape and his firm stance on Israel’s actions in Gaza. As the 2024 presidential race intensifies, his comments on foreign policy and domestic issues are likely to resonate with his base, further shaping the discourse on America’s role in the Middle East conflict.
