On Thursday, Michael Dwayne Smith, aged 41, received the death penalty for the fatal shooting of two individuals, including an Indian national, in Oklahoma back in 2002. Reports from KOCO-TV state that Smith was administered a lethal injection in McAlester city jail, resulting in his demise.

The heinous crimes occurred on February 22, 2002, when Smith murdered 24-year-old Sharad Pulluru and 40-year-old Janet Moore in separate incidents. Following a thorough investigation and trial, the court found Smith guilty and sentenced him to death.

Statement from Oklahoma Attorney General

In response to Smith's sentencing, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond issued a statement expressing his hope for closure for the families of Moore and Sharad. Drummond stated, “I pray that today brings some measure of peace to the families of Janet Miller-Moore and Sharath Pulluru. It has been a long and difficult 22 years for his loved ones. My heart aches for the pain they have endured.”

Drummond further highlighted Sharad's promising future, describing him as “a brilliant young man with a generous spirit” and “an inspiration” to his family. He emphasized that both victims were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Family Opposes Clemency Grant

Notably, Sharad Pulluru's brother, Harish Pulluru, expressed opposition to Smith's potential clemency last month. Harish Pulluru emphasized Sharad's significant role in the family, stating, “Sharath was an amazing person, he was the first person in our family to come to the United States. It was because of him that I became a doctor.” He continued, “I saw the pain that my parents went through every day. Sharath was a loving son, brother, and uncle. He was the life of our family. His sudden death in such a violent manner has affected our family. We want clemency to be denied.”
