Her appointment, made by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, comes amid growing uncertainty for immigrant communities in the United States and national debates about immigration controls and access to rights. Ali, the daughter of Pakistani immigrants and raised in Brooklyn, has built her public career around community work and minority representation. Her personal history, marked by her family's immigration experience, has been a central theme in her discourse. In her first statements after the announcement, she assured that her priority will be to strengthen protections for immigrants and expand access to legal and language services. “At a time when immigrants face intensified attacks, we must strengthen protections and create real pathways to stability,” she stated in remarks reported by Gothamist. Prior to this position, Ali was recognized as the first Muslim woman to hold a deputy chief of staff position in the New York City Council. She has also worked with American Muslim organizations and served on the Council on American-Islamic Relations, an organization with national visibility on civil rights issues. Her profile has generated both support and criticism in some political circles. However, the mayor's office highlights her experience in public administration and her close ties to diverse immigrant communities. Ali succeeds Manuel Castro, who led MOIA throughout former Mayor Eric Adams' term and was the first previously undocumented person to hold the position.
