Government of Rhode Island spends $70,000 to acquire a carpet with errors in its design
The Rhode Island government spent $70,000 to buy a large carpet with a couple of design errors that no one had noticed
One of the employees of Democrat Dan McKee, the governor of Rhode Island, made an oversight that put the state on the media radar when it was discovered how, in purchasing a custom-made carpet with certain Specifications were provided exchange in for $70,000. At no point was it detected that it contained an error in the embroidery of a couple of shields.
The purpose of the purchase was to replace the carpet located in the State Room on the second floor, which is located next to the governor's office and where press conferences and certain ceremonial events are usually held.
It should be noted that, after the 2020 election, one of the pending tasks indicated by state officials was to replace the carpet in the aforementioned room. This was because the words "Providence Plantations" were dropped from the formal name of the state, which meant modifying all spaces where it appeared.
Although the process was somewhat lengthy, on February 2nd, the new carpet, manufactured by Stark Carpet Cop., a leading company in the luxury carpet industry founded in 1938 and headquartered in Boston, was installed.
The change in the floor covering The 1,125-square-foot rug looked wonderful until a member of the WPRI television station noticed that two of the embroidered seals on the new rug featured the state seal with the words previously agreed upon to be removed. After this information was made public, the embroidered seals were temporarily covered using two round rugs, which still have their price tags showing the $110 price tag they were purchased for at Ocean State Job Lot, a discount retail store. In a statement, Karen Greco, spokesperson for the Rhode Island Department of Management, acknowledged the error but did not assign blame to anyone in particular.
“The error in the seal was simply human error, and the plan is to correct it. The two seals will be hand-cut from the carpet and new seals will be sewn on. We are waiting for a timeline and budget for the correction,” he said.
