Hispanic support for Trump continues to fall in his second term
Only 27% approve of his job performance and the majority believe the country is going in the wrong direction, according to a survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center
Seventy-three percent of Hispanic voters said disapprove of Trump's handling of the situation, while 27% of respondents approve, according to The Associated Press-NORC Center poll results released Friday.
This is a sharp drop from the 44% approval rating Trump garnered in an AP-NORC poll conducted just before he began his second term.
The percentage of Hispanic adults who say the country is headed in the wrong direction has also increased slightly in recent months, from 63% in March to 73% now.
Discontent on the Rise Regarding the Economy and Immigration
Hispanic adults also expressed less confidence in Trump's handling of the economy and immigration, two key issues that bolstered his support during last year's campaign.
Some said their dissatisfaction was related to a lack of affordability nationwide: 65% of Hispanic voters said they were stressed about the cost of food, while 61% were stressed about housing costs and 52% were worried about the cost of health care.
On immigration, the Trump administration has increased the rate of immigration raids across the country and has sent masked federal agents to “sanctuary cities” to deport immigrants believed to be in the country illegally.
About a quarter of Hispanic adults surveyed said they support deporting all immigrants living in the United States illegally, while about half opposed the policy and others had no opinion.
The Supreme Court last month lifted a lower court judge's limits on immigration detentions in the Los Angeles area based on Spanish language or profession.
Economists view immigration and economic concerns as intertwined, with both low-wage and high-skilled Latino workers feeling the brunt of economic uncertainty and strict immigration enforcement.
The research found that, overall, immigration remains a top personal concern for Hispanic adults.
About two-thirds said the issue is important to them, compared with about six-in-ten white adults and half of Black adults.
Hispanic Republican Support Declines
Trump's declining popularity is evident even among Hispanic Republicans, a key coalition in his electoral base.
The survey shows that about 65 percent of Hispanic Republicans said they have a “very” or “fairly” favorable opinion of the president, a notable decrease from a September 2024 AP-NORC poll that showed 83% viewed him at least “fairly” favorably.
The AP-NORC poll, conducted October 9-13, included 1,289 adults. The margin of error for all adults is ±3.8 percentage points, and for all Hispanic adults it is ±6.9 percentage points.
