Venezuela turns to OPEC to stop “aggression” by the United States
Nicolas Maduro warned that the military deployment puts “the stability of Venezuelan oil production and the world market in grave danger”
Venezuela asked the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for help to stop the “aggression” of the United States, which has maintained an anti-narcotics operation in the Caribbean since August, according to a letter from President Nicolas Maduro released this Sunday. The Venezuelan president warns that the United States intends to overthrow him and seize the world's largest oil reserves. “I hope to count on your best efforts to help stop this aggression, which is growing stronger and seriously threatens the balance of the international energy market,” states Maduro's letter, read by Vice President Delcy Rodriguez during the second 2025 ministerial conference of the OPEC+ alliance, led by Saudi Arabia and in which Russia also participates. The text indicates that “the stability of Venezuelan oil production and the world market are in grave danger.” The US deployment includes destroyers, fighter jets, thousands of troops, and the world's largest aircraft carrier. Venezuela maintains that the maneuvers are not intended to combat drug trafficking, but rather to overthrow Maduro, whose government is considered illegitimate by Washington.

Russians stop flying
The United States is promoting a maritime and now aeronautical blockade of Venezuela and its surrounding areas, after President Donald Trump warned on Saturday that the Caribbean country's airspace should be considered "completely closed." Last week, Washington issued an air travel alert due to increased military activity in the area, which was heeded by six airlines that suspended their connections with Venezuela.
This Sunday, the Russian travel agency Pegas Touristik, which frequently flew to the island of Nueva Esparta (north), also complied with the US alert and suspended its flights. Since 2021, Venezuela and Russia have signed several tourism agreements, thanks to which Nueva Esparta has received thousands of Russian tourists who contribute to the island's economy.primarily dependent on tourism.
The South American country maintains, for now, its two routes to Russia, an ally of Chavismo, with the state airline Conviasa.
