A woman died and a teenager was left in critical condition after a shooting at a Missouri supermarket
The alleged attacker was subdued by armed civilians before turning the gun on himself and now faces charges of murder and other serious crimes.
Amy Coon, a 45-year-old grandmother who had recently overcome a tough battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma, died after a gunman allegedly opened fire in the parking lot of a Cosentino's Price Chopper supermarket in Missouri.
The attack occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Kansas City Star.
In addition to Coon, a 16-year-old supermarket employee was seriously injured during the shooting.
The teenager, whose identity has not been disclosed because he is a minor, was collecting shopping carts when he was hit by gunfire.
The authorities reported that he remains hospitalized in an intensive care unit.
Two armed citizens prevented a greater tragedy
Police indicated that two armed civilians who were at the scene quickly intervened and managed to arrest the suspect during the attack.
According to Pleasant Hill Police Chief Tommy Wright, the actions of both citizens could have prevented the number of victims from being higher.
During the incident, the alleged attacker shot himself in the head, but survived. He currently remains in police custody while receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
Suspect faced a history of family threats
The defendant was identified as Allen Price, 27 years old.
Authorities revealed that Price had previously been released on bail in another court case related to alleged threats against family members.
In that case, he faced accusations of harassing members of his family and threatening to shoot them.
He now faces charges of first-degree murder, two counts of assault or attempted assault, and three counts of armed criminal action.
Court documents indicate that the weapon used would have been a .243 caliber Winchester rifle.
Investigators recovered three shell casings at the scene and assured that the suspect was also carrying around twenty additional ammunition at the time of his arrest.
Mental health history under review
Court records also reflect history related to the defendant's mental health.
Likewise, previous records indicate that during an arrest that occurred in 2025, he admitted possessing a shotgun.
However, Police Chief Tommy Wright pointed out that, at the moment, there is no evidence that directly links that previous case with the attack in the supermarket.
The death of Amy Coon generated numerous expressions of grief among family, friends and members of the community.
In her obituary, loved ones described her as a woman who found happiness in the simplest aspects of life.
“Amy lived a simple life and found joy in the little things,” notes the tribute published after her death.
Family members also remembered her love of crafts, gardening and animals, especially her dog Levi and her cat French Fry.
The text highlights that even during the most difficult years of cancer treatment he never stopped accompanying his loved ones.
"She cared deeply about those she loved. Even during her years of cancer treatment she was there for her family and was the best Grammy anyone could have."
