Police investigate robbery against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, NBA MVP
The robbery occurred while the Thunder star was playing a home game against the Wizards
Police in Nichols Hills, an exclusive residential area north of Oklahoma City, are investigating a robbery at a home reportedly belonging to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) and star player for the Thunder.
The incident occurred Thursday night, while the Canadian player Gilgeous-Alexander was playing a game at the Paycom Center against the Washington Wizards, according to AP. Officers received the alert around 7:45 pm, but by the time they arrived, the suspects had already fled and no one was inside the house. "The suspects fled the area before police arrived.
Although no arrests have been made, there is no reason to believe the public is in danger," police said in an official statement. The KWTV website broadcast images of the police presence at the home, valued at nearly $4 million, according to records reviewed by The Oklahoman. Witnesses reported seeing Thunder general manager Sam Presti arrive at the scene during the investigation, which lasted several hours.
Recurring robberies against professional athletes: The Gilgeous-Alexander case is not isolated. In recent months, several American sports stars have been victims of similar robberies. Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Joe Burrow of the NFL; Luka Doncic of the NBA; and Evgeni Malkin of the NHL have all suffered burglaries at their homes, raising concerns among professional sports leagues. Authorities believe the thieves operate on game days when players are away. They typically enter through back windows and target luxury items or high-value electronics.
As a result, the NBA issued a statement to its teams in November 2024 urging them to strengthen home security. Recommendations included installing modern alarm systems with constantly active cameras, storing valuables in safes, removing online listings that show the interior of homes, hiring private security guards, andIf possible, have security dogs available during trips.
