Donald Trump imposes a 100% tariff on imported patent medicines
Donald Trump intends to curb US dependence on imported patent medicines and therefore decided to impose a 100% tariff
The tariffs enacted through this order correspond to what is known as Section 232 and were designated by the head of state for reasons of national security.
Under that perspective, companies that have approved plans to establish manufacturing plants in the United States will face a 20% tariff.
Regarding medicines imported from member countries of the European Union, as well as those manufactured in Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, or Liechtenstein, they will be subject to a 15% tariff.
Likewise, medicines produced in the United Kingdom will be taxed at a “lower” rate, not yet specified, as it will be subject to a trade agreement between the United States and the British government.
In a statement, Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Services, praised the order issued by the New York businessman, as he asserts that it will make it less expensive for Americans with limited resources to access the medicines necessary to maintain their health in optimal condition.
“President Trump's agreement with the United Kingdom represents another major step toward ending a system that forces Americans to pay “More so that others pay less.
American patients deserve the same affordable access to the medicines they need as patients in the UK,” he wrote.
However, in another letter, Stephen J. Ubl, president and CEO of the pharmaceutical trade association PhRMA, anticipated that the signed executive order would increase the price of the taxed medicines.
