Russia and China criticize US conduct towards Venezuela
In an emergency session of the Security Council, both countries expressed their support for Caracas
Russia and China strongly criticized the military and economic pressure exerted by the United States on Venezuela before the UN Security Council on Tuesday, describing it as "cowboy behavior" and "intimidation." Caracas, for its part, said it was the victim of “the greatest extortion in our history” by the Donald Trump administration. The United States, which has had a significant war fleet deployed in the Caribbean since August, recently announced the imposition of a naval blockade to prevent the export of Venezuelan oil. Trump accuses Caracas of using crude oil sales to finance “narco-terrorism, human trafficking, murder, and kidnapping.” “The actions committed by the United States violate all fundamental norms of international law,” declared the Russian ambassador to the UN. Vasily Nebenzya, who represents the country that invaded Ukraine in 2022, described the blockade as a “blatant act of aggression.” “Washington's responsibility is also evident in the catastrophic consequences of this cowboy attitude,” he added.
“China opposes”
“China opposes all acts of unilateralism and intimidation and supports all countries in defending their sovereignty and national dignity,” declared Chinese Sun Lei during the emergency meeting requested by Venezuela, which was agreed with the support of both Moscow and Beijing, both of which hold permanent seats on the Security Council.
“The United States will do everything in its power to protect our representative hemisphere, our borders, and the American people,” responded Washington's ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz. The US representative reiterated Trump's accusations that "Maduro is a fugitive wanted by US justice and the head of the foreign terrorist organization Cartel of the Suns." Venezuela's representative, Samuel Moncada, for his part, said that Washington is subjecting Caracas to the "greatest extortion" in its history. "We are facing a power that acts outside the bounds of international law," he said, demanding that Venezuelans abandon our country and hand it over (...). This is the biggest extortion in our history,” he stated.
