RG Kar Medical College Junior Doctors Demand Justice, Accountability, and Security Measures
Junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital demand justice and accountability following the tragic rape-murder incident, calling for arrests, resignations, and enhanced security measures.
The ongoing protests at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have intensified as junior doctors continue to demand justice and accountability following the tragic rape-murder incident that has shaken the institution to its core. The junior doctors, deeply angered and pained by the horrific crime, have outlined a series of demands aimed at ensuring that justice is served and that similar incidents are prevented in the future.
Primary Demand: Arrests and Accountability
One of the leading voices among the protesting doctors, a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College, stated emphatically, “Our primary demand is the arrest of the culprits with proper evidence, accompanied by an official press release from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) confirming the same. We cannot rest until those responsible are brought to justice.”
In addition to the demand for arrests, the doctors are also calling for the resignation of several high-ranking officials at the institution, including the former Principal of RG Kar, the Medical Superintendent and Vice Principal (MSVP), the Dean of Student Affairs, the Head of the Chest Medicine Department, and the Assistant Superintendent on Duty at the time of the incident. “These individuals must be barred from holding any administrative or authoritative positions in any institution for the remainder of their services,” the junior doctor added, stressing the need for accountability at all levels.
Call for Explanation and Compensation
The junior doctors are also demanding an explanation from the Shastra Bhawan regarding the decision to reinstate the former Principal of RG Kar at another medical college after his resignation was initially rejected. “We demand to know why his resignation was not accepted and why he was reinstated in another institution as a Principal,” the doctor said, questioning the transparency and integrity of the decision-making process.
While acknowledging that no compensation can ever make up for the life that was lost, the doctors have urged the government to provide lifelong support and adequate financial compensation to the victim’s family. “Her parents should be provided with lifelong support and adequate financial compensation by the government, and it should be announced immediately,” the junior doctor stated, underscoring the importance of supporting the victim’s family in their time of need.
Demand for Enhanced Security Measures
In light of the tragic incident, the junior doctors have also called for the immediate implementation of enhanced security measures at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. These measures include the installation of CCTV cameras, the deployment of both male and female security guards, and a special focus on ensuring safety in both on-campus and off-campus hostels. “The safety and security of students and staff must be prioritized to prevent such incidents from happening again,” the doctor emphasized.
Response to Digital Defamation and Mob Attack
The junior doctors have also expressed their concerns over the digital defamation of RG Kar Medical College students that has been circulating on social media. They are urging the Commissioner of Police to take strict action against those responsible for spreading defamatory content and for circulating the photo of the victim online. Additionally, they have demanded the resignation of the current Principal of RG Kar Medical College, the Commissioner of Police of Kolkata, the Officer in Charge of Tala Police Station, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police North Kolkata for their “shameful response” to the mob attack on the eve of Independence Day.
The demands put forth by the junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital reflect their deep frustration and determination to seek justice for the victim. As the protests continue, the spotlight remains on the authorities to take swift and decisive action to address these demands and restore trust within the medical community.
