The Trump administration will continue with arrests of immigrants and deployment for at least 60 days
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned that if the violence in Los Angeles does not stop, he will mobilize
The Trump administration announced Saturday that it was deploying the National Guard to Los Angeles, and as the number of immigration raids has increased in Southern California in recent days, "border czar" Tom Homan assured that the operations will continue daily.
According to the Trump administration, the National Guard is being deployed to Los Angeles in response to large-scale protests that erupted Saturday following dozens of arrests Friday in Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations across the city.
“If Governor Gavin Newsom of California and Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles cannot do their jobs, which everyone knows they cannot, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the rioting and looting problem, as it should!” the president posted on his Truth Social platform Saturday night.
However, the detail in Trump’s memo stated that at least 2,000 National Guard troops were being deployed under the president’s Title 10 authority “for 60 days or at the discretion of the Secretary of Defense.”
The president also used Title 10 authority to order the deployment of troops to the southern border after taking office in January.
That is, the Secretary of Defense will be able to employ any other members of the regular Armed Forces as needed to supplement and support the protection of Federal functions and property in any numbers he deems appropriate in his discretion.
In that sense, Tom Homan issued the warning: “I tell you what: We will continue to enforce the law every day in Los Angeles… We will enforce immigration law every day in Los Angeles. I don’t care if you like it or not.”
Furthermore, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth not only announced on social media that the National Guard would be mobilized “IMMEDIATELY” to support federal law enforcement in Los Angeles, but added that,If the violence continues, he will also mobilize “active duty Marines” from Camp Pendleton in San Diego County. He added that the Marines are already on high alert.
Earlier that, in a post to X responding to the National Guard deployment order, Newsom wrote that “the federal government is taking steps to assume control of the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 troops. This move is deliberately provocative and will only escalate tensions.”
“Los Angeles authorities can access law enforcement assistance at any time. We maintain close coordination with the city and county, and there is currently no unmet need. The Guard has served Los Angeles admirably during the recovery.” This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust.”
Newsom also wrote that additional California Highway Patrol units were being deployed to Los Angeles-area highways to “maintain the peace.”
“The federal government is sowing chaos to have an excuse to escalate the situation,” Newsom said. “This is not how any civilized country behaves.”
